In the realm of interior design, the strategic use of colour and materials can shape spaces and evoke emotions. Retroscena and Mini Cuppa exemplify how the use of blues and unique materials can create captivating atmospheres.

Retroscena

Located in Rome’s Appio Latino district, Retroscena embodies a bold and playful approach to interior design. Designed by La Macchina Studio, the space features vibrant pops of blue, yellow, and red against a white backdrop, creating an energetic atmosphere.

A standout feature in Retroscena is its restored Venetian terrazzo floors, offering a textural contrast to the bright white plastered walls and colourful accents. The living area, defined by a clear band in black and Botticino marble, features a yellow curtain running along a demolished wall, delineating functional areas while enhancing the theatrical ambiance.

In the bedroom, a brick-red microcement treatment enhances the floor, while the hallway continues the original flooring design with a pinkish binder mixed with pozzolan powder. The bathroom, covered in white mosaic tiles with contrasting black joints, has an arched entrance that reveals a back wall in peacock-coloured enamel and a freestanding washbasin.

Mini Cuppa Tea Shop

Mini Cuppa embraces a monochromatic colour scheme with white as the predominant hue. The walls, ceiling, and many furnishings are finished in various shades of white. Interest is added through strategically incorporated blue accents, ranging from pale hues to deeper tones.

Double-height reeded glass windows diffuse natural light, adding texture and providing a blurred view of the greenery behind. At the center of the space lies an extensive communal table lined with a plant pot at its heart, visually connected to the outside garden.

Peachy-pink marble is used extensively throughout the space, adorning the tabletops and wall paneling. Custom white steel tubular chairs add another layer of character to the space, boasting vibrant blue fabric.
