In this article, we explore two projects that use natural materials to create serene spaces. In Melbourne, Calia Emporium by Architects EAT blends terrazzo, travertine, and timber with a Japanese-inspired design. Meanwhile, TAKA + PARTNERS' Antigoni Beach Resort in Chalkidiki uses woven willow, wood, and natural textiles to seamlessly integrate with its coastal surroundings.
Calia Emporium
In Melbourne’s vibrant cityscape, Calia Emporium offers a serene escape, blending a restaurant and retail space with a Japanese-inspired aesthetic.
The design features a neutral colour palette, with terrazzo flooring at the entrance welcoming visitors with its natural tones and intricate patterns. In the retail area, travertine stone flooring adds a touch of luxury, with its warm undertones complementing the high-end offerings.
Warm timber elements enhance the inviting ambiance, while handmade white ceramics scattered throughout the space highlight the craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The material palette, featuring wood, tiles, and light-coloured natural textiles, pays homage to the region's beauty. In the guest rooms, earthy tones and tactile materials create a serene atmosphere, with woven willow dividers and headboards extending to the ceiling, enveloping the space in warmth.
Strategically placed water features enhance the calming ambiance, adding a gentle, soothing soundtrack to the experience.
